In C. elegans as well as in P. pacificus sex is determined by the ratio of X chromosomes to autosomes. XX animals develop as hermaphrodites, X0 animals are males. However, there are mutants that show a sex reversal:

  • In tra(transformer)-mutants, XX animals look like males
  • In a fem or her mutant background X0 animals have a female or hermaphrodite appearence, respectively.
